Miguel Cabrera Extension in the Works?

Posted by Alan Hull on March 8th, 2008

mlb_g_cabrera_300.jpgSI.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting that the Detroit Tigers and Miguel Cabrera may be discussing a long-term extention. Since the inception of this website and since Cabrera was initially traded, I’ve said that this is the end-goal for the Tigers. If they can somehow get Cabrera to sign himself away before he plays a full season, even better.

Miguel Cabrera reported to camp looking noticeably slim, compared to recent seasons. He is said to have spent the off-season doing extensive weight training for the first time in his career and some say he may have lost between 15-25 pounds.

When reporters asked Cabrera if he’d like a 10-year deal, he responded, “sounds interesting,” and when asked if he’d like to be paid $20 million annually, he said, “that sounds good.” Twenty four year-olds are evidently intrigued by un-godly sums of money.

In other news, Oakland Athletics shortstop Bobby Crosby is looking to rebound after three injury-plagued seasons. The 2005 American League Rookie of the Year is said to have altered the mechanics of his swing a bit, to reduce unnecessary movement and is getting good results.

At age 28, the chances of Crosby becoming a star are slim to none, but if he can manage to stay healthy for a full season, and avoid the flukish injuries of years past, a .750 - .800 OPS from a middle infield position would be welcomed in addition to his defense, which is generally regarded as around average.

In four seasons, Crosby is a career .240/.310/.390 hitter.
